Musician Spotlight

Shannon Small

Flutist, Woodwind Specialist

"Work hard and enjoy the journey, only then will you be amazing!"

Where it began...

I started playing Flute in 4th grade, saxophone-oboe-violin-piano-voice in HS and additional woodwinds in college. I remember in junior high thinking of becoming a doctor or professional flutist. I don’t remember when I actually decided, although I know my career choice was earlier than most.

Influencers...

Marcel Moyse, Julia Bogorad, Wendy Williams, James Galloway, Jullius Baker, Tadeu Coelho.

If you could be a fruit...

Raspberries & blackberries are an all berry blend, because berries are very good for you and taste really yummy!

Favorite Performance...

I have done a lecture recital and much research on Jolivet, and was contracted by Edwin Mellen Press

for a book and CD of Jolivet’s flute music, which was put on the back burner to keep the bills paid, as I wouldn’t obviously be paid until after completion. Needless to say, I really favor Jolivet, but also most music of Ravel, Stravinsky, Tchaikovsky, Shostovovich, Dvorak, etc.

What's on your playlist...

LOL! I have a large mishmash of musical selection of all time periods and genres from baroque to today’s hits.
